Worker using a stump grinder to grind a tree stump below the lawn in a residential yard

Why Grind a Stump

  • Stumps are hard to mow around and easy to trip over
  • Rotting stumps can attract carpenter ants, termites and other pests
  • Some trees send up new sprouts from the stump and roots
  • Grinding frees up the space for grass, a garden bed or a new tree

How Stump Grinding Works

A stump grinder uses a spinning wheel with carbide teeth to chew the stump into wood chips, usually several inches below the soil line. The chips can be raked back into the hole as mulch or hauled away and replaced with topsoil so you can reseed.

Before any grinding, underground utilities should be marked. In Maryland, that's a free call to Miss Utility at 811.

Grinding vs. Full Stump Removal

Grinding takes the stump below grade but leaves the deeper roots to break down on their own, which is what most yards need. Full removal digs out the root ball and is usually only necessary if you're building or pouring concrete in that exact spot.

What Affects the Price

Stump grinding prices depend on the stump's diameter, how many stumps you have, how easy they are to reach, and whether you want the chips hauled away. Grouping several stumps into one visit often lowers the cost per stump.

Stump Grinding Questions

How deep is a stump ground?

Most stumps are ground several inches below the soil line, which is deep enough to cover with topsoil and grass. Ask for deeper grinding if you plan to plant in the same spot.

What happens to the wood chips?

They can be left in the hole as mulch or hauled away and replaced with topsoil. Let the crew know which you prefer.

Will the roots grow back?

Most trees won't regrow after the stump is ground. Some species can send up sprouts from the roots for a season, and those can be cut or mowed down.

Can you grind a stump in a tight spot?

Smaller grinders can fit through most backyard gates. Mention any narrow access when you request your estimate.

Do I need to call Miss Utility first?

Underground lines should be marked before grinding. In Maryland, call 811 or submit a request online with Miss Utility, which is free.
